week of prayer in parliament 2010

This week see's the start of the 7th Parliament and Government Week of Prayer, which kicks off this Sunday (6th June) and runs through until next Friday (11th).  24-7 Prayer, Christians in Parliament, SUSA and many other groups have been organising prayer in and around Westminster each year and seeing some incredible things happen.

Phil Togwell, UK Director of 24-7 Prayer writes:

"This year feels unusually significant. Some have suggested that it's the 'seven year' thing... Jericho, anyone? Jacob? Or perhaps it's just the political turmoil of the past year or so... the exposing of financial abuses through the expenses scandal (we've been praying for "light to shine in the darkness" for many years), or the extraordinary National Elections and our new coalition Government? Whatever the reason... this is a good time, perhaps the best time in our lifetimes, to pray for "rulers and those in government." (1 Timothy 2)"

Whatever our political leanings, that encouragement of Paul to pray seems vital.  We'd love it if you'd like to get involved in any of the events taking place and there's lots of ways to do so:

+ you can sign up to pray for an hour or more wherever you are, on your own or with friends. http://www.24-7prayer.com/signup/9c0181. 24-7 have set up and online sign-up on their website that covers the whole week, and we'd love to fill it before the weekend. Please book a slot and pass this onto others who'd like to join in with us. And if you feel the Lord speaking to you, or giving you pictures or Bible verses during your prayer time, please email them into Phil Togwell at parliamentandgovernment@24-7prayer.com, and he'll feed them into the prayer going on inside the Houses of Parliament.

+ you can prayer for Parliament and Government during your church services/gatherings on Sunday (6th June). Phil Anderson has designed a whole bunch of ready-to-use resources for church services, and they're available on the SUSA website.

+ you can join in the daily prayer walking around the Parliamentary estate, Monday 7th - Friday 11th, starting at 10.30am. We'll meet in Victoria Park Gardens, at the South end of the Houses of Parliament - we will gather beside the Wilberforce Memorial (with the weirdly/brightly coloured roof) in the middle of the Gardens. If you download the Week of Prayer flier from the Christians in Parliament website, you'll find a small map on it; http://www.christiansinparliament.org.uk/

+ you can join us at the end of the week, on Friday (11th) evening, for a celebration event in the Emmanuel Centre, Marsham Street.

"Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well..."

Andy Freeman, 05/06/2010
