Westminster Declaration
Joint statement with Conservative Christian Fellowahip and LibDem Christian Forum
“Abraham Kuyper once said, “There is not a square inch of domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘It is Mine!’”
This is an incredibly important truth to bear in mind when discussing politics and therefore reducing the scope of salt and light to just a narrow range of issues marginalises, once again, Christian engagement in politics. There is also a danger that people will judge the faith of a Christian standing for election, merely by whether or not they have signed this pledge. We urge people not to do so.
There is much to commend in the actual text of the Westminster Declaration, but much to question about its timing, depth and tone. It has also been inevitably hampered by the lack of consultation with Christian Parliamentarians and the main Christian groups involved in praying and serving within our political infrastructure.
As www.christiansinpolitics.org.uk, we are putting party political divisions aside to encourage Christians to engage with the parties, join the parties and seek transformation from within, as well as protesting from the outside. We believe that relationship-building is key to seeing the kingdom come in the realm of politics, as we seek the transformation of people, not just legislation.
Ends.
At CSM, we are aware that candidates are bombarded with a huge inbox full of attempts to get them to sign up to various causes and campaigns. With issues as complex and important as those being raised, and such a compressed timetable for candidates, we need to look for genuine, thoughtful engagement, rather than speedy, box-ticking exercises. We must question the strategic usefulness of such disconnected campaigns while commending the desire to see the inbreaking of the kingdom into politics.
