Faith is a great starting point for the election - Stephen Timms

Stephen Timms, Labour's MP for East Ham and Vice Chair of the Labour Party for Faith Groups said: "I believe that faith is a great starting point for politics. In the last few years we've seen a growing wave of progressive political action that has significant roots in our faith communities, such as Jubilee 2000 and Make Poverty History. Progressive political action has also been directed at UK issues. Christian groups, for example, have taken advantage of the government's Future Jobs Fund to help young people find work. This activism has been warmly welcomed by the Prime Minister. The Labour Party is firmly committed to working with faith groups and as Party Vice Chair for Faith Groups I look forward to encouraging and sustaining this cooperation.

Dawn Butler, Labour's MP for Brent South, and Vice Chair for Young People also made a plea for young people to register to vote. Dawn said, "It is vital that young people make their views count by taking part. There is a big choice at the next election. The Labour Party are setting out guarantees for young people who are unemployed and is making extra funds available for apprenticeships and university places. The Conservative Party refuses to back these policies and is prioritising the reduction of inheritance taxes on the largest estates. Their policies are the recipe for creating a lost generation of young people.

It is particularly important that young people register to vote. Labour policies are designed to ensure that young people get a fair start in life. In what will be a tight election, their voice could determine whether we get a government that is interested in a fair future for all or one that is only interested in the wealthy few."
