The launch today of a Faiths Forum for London is the culmination of work by a Faiths Forum for London Development Group, representative of the nine world faiths. The Development Group has been hosted by the London Civic Forum which, over the years, has received funding from the London Church Leaders, the Home Office ChangeUp programme, the London Development Agency and the Department of Communities and Local Government which has enabled it to employ consultants and staff in the development process. We are most grateful to these funders, to the London Civic Forum and to all those who have contributed to making possible the establishment of a Faiths Forum for London.

The Faiths Forum for London will have a Council of 30 members drawn from the nine major world faiths, including three places for co-opted members. Its objectives are:

• to provide a means of contact and channel of communication between London government bodies and London’s faith communities;

• to provide an additional channel between London’s faith communities and other sectors in London’s civic society, particularly city-wide public bodies, funders and associated partnerships;

• to advance understanding of the contribution of faiths in the London region;

• to enable the sharing of information and good practice across and within London’s faith groups and thereby to support inter-faith relationships;

• to be a centre for research, information, debate, discussion and cross-sector engagement on issues relating to regional policy and the concerns of London’s faith groups;

• to facilitate faith community organisations in developing expertise in social policy areas, forming networks and partnerships and being able to initiate civic engagement on issues of concern to them.
