Pictures from Haiti
Use these pictures and facts to stir you to prayer for the dying and broken in Haiti, who have lost family, homes and livelihoods. Pray for the world leaders that they will drop Haiti's debt and build a more sustainable future for the people of Haiti.
Haiti, With 76 per cent of its population below the poverty line, has been paying some $60 to $80 million a year in debt service. (June 2009)
The country suffered an aid embargo between 2001 and 2004 as part of an apparent attempt by the U.S. government to destabilize and topple the government.
In July 2009, 60% of its debt was cancelled
In 2010 Haiti is projected to pay around $10million in debt repayment to International Financial Institutions.
Haiti owes as much debt now as was cancelled by the international community only 9 months ago: $1.2 billion. In the next 9 years Haiti is due to repay over $500 million to all of Haiti's creditors combined.
Last month, in response to the earthquake, the IMF offered a new loan of $102 million
The IMF has said: "The IMF is now working with all donors to try to delete all the Haitian debt, including our new loan."
Take action, write a letter to Alistair Darling asking him to drop Haiti's debt.
